2:17AM - The Inbox Management Tips

Pros offer timely tips to empty that inbox - The Boston Globe

Even though i have a Blackberry, i still find myself overwhelmed by emails at times. I tend to want to read every damn email that comes in, all the way from the bottom of the thread, even if the email is really none of my concern and i was just copied for info. So im always looking out for Inbox management tips and i thought the above article was a good read.

I was particularly struck by this quote: "I either forward it, I delete it, or I answer it. You don’t want to close an e-mail without having dealt with it."

Good mantra to live by. I'm striving to do that but sometimes it's just hard lol. I went to Jakarta recently and as always, emails tend to pile up and i still have a backlog of stuff to follow up on :S

I havent been to Jakarta since 2007 and this trip was pretty uneventful since most of my business was conducted at the hotel and there wasnt any earthquakes or bombings lol. The terrorist thought was kinda always at the back of my mind since i was staying at the other Ritz hotel that hasnt been bombed. But evidently i survived!

Being the city boy that i am, i just had to take photos of the...city, what else!

Jakarta1 Jakarta

And finally, TGIF everyone! I know i am!

1:26AM - The Sexy, Naughty, Beauty Queen

My, this is precious.

RAZORTV - Sexy, naughty, beauty queen (Miss Singapore World Pt 3)

~

In other news, the GP i've been seeing all my life, Dr Tan, has passed away from cancer. I feel sad that i never got to chat with him recently. Of the couple of times i've been to the clinic this year, he wasnt there and the stand-in doctor told me Dr Tan was in semi-retirement already. I thought: how nice, he probably earned a lot and can now retire comfortably. Little did i know...

And even if he were there, i doubt we would have much of a chat since there are obviously other patients in line, and well, let's face it, if i didnt know his condition, i would have assumed i would still see him, same place, next time. Classic case of taking things for granted eh.

Anyway, i heard the news from my mum. Turns out another friend knew about it too - through the friend's mum too. In this modern day of viral news through social media platforms like blogs, Twitter, Facebook, i guess the traditional Word of Mouth through the auntie gossip network is not to be underestimated!

2:32AM - The Trump Situation

Earlier on my way home, i was catching up on emails on my Berry when i saw one from the VP. Opened up the email and as it turns out, the note was to inform the marketing director is no longer working at the company "with immediate effect".

"Oh my gawd!" I exclaimed out loud before i could stop myself. To those random strangers around me that i startled, SORRY! I was just too shocked as i just saw him before i left the office.

Oh well, looks like my nice workplace is not entirely immune to politicking. And as with all bad news, they go viral real fast and the email exchanges / theories came fast and furious.

I think i better start sucking up to the VP before he decides i'm next bwahahah.

1:18AM - The EQ-less Idiot

Hmmm, i spotted this comment on a Facebook photo album of a lady friend:

"U actually look pretty in the pics . . must be using a good photo editor . ."

I dont know if he was joking, but i thought that was a really rude, tasteless, and brainless remark. And, if you look the way you look, please take your own advice first.

4:36PM - The Prophet Thio

Prophet Thio? « Everyday’s Life in a Snapshot- for lesser mortals only

Funny, i was reading this blog and they posted a link to the infamous Feminist Mentor's company profile page and it seems to me the website has been hacked??

For one, her synopsis reads:
Very much a grand dame of the corporate legal scene (her looks, as you can see, belie her experience), she counts many of the country’s judges and high-ranking officials among her classmates and her ex-students.

LOL! That doesnt sound very corporate-ish. And someone noted in the comments the Directors' Profile page is referred to as the "Rogue Gallery"??? LOL. If this isnt due to the mischief of some pretty funny jokers, i'd be really speechless.

I also noticed a Feminist Mentor Twitter account and almost spit out the water i was drinking reading some of the tweets:

@bionic_creative Sexually challenged woman means woman who challenge people to sex. I love them a lot. :) #awaresg

All you sexually challenged woman out there, I challenge you to one on one sex. Muahahahahaha. #awaresg

1:03AM - The Star Trekkers

Did anyone else who watched the Star Trek movie laugh when John Cho aka "Harold" of Harold and Kumar fame appeared on-screen? He just has this perpetual funny look on his face and when he says he knows hand-to-hand combat in the movie, you know it was bullshit lol.

Honestly i never followed Star Trek but i went to watch the movie on hearing good reviews and for the cast. It was a kick to see "Sylar" of Heroes on the silver screen. I must say i did enjoy the movie!

Live long and prosper. *gives the V-sign* (not the sissy act cute version but the silly alien one)

1:49AM - The Laptop Killer

Gizmodo - Laptop Kills Woman - Notebooks

Despite the grim subject, I found this pretty hilarious. Woman crashed into a truck, would have survived if not for the laptop on the backseat, which flew forward and crashed into the back of her head and neck killing her.

I was scanning through the comments and people were speculating the fate of the woman if the notebook was a MacBook Air:

If only she would have had a Mac Book Air...it would have just floated by her,lol

If she had a MacBook Air, it would have decapitated her.

Hhaha, not to mention there's this huge ass contextual advertising banner for Sony laptops, touting it to be the "world's lightest 8" notebook", right across the mid of the whole page.

Safety tip of the day folks, no laptops allowed on the backseat. Buckle it up if you must, LOL!

11:53PM - The Chore of Getting Your Own Drink

The papers surveyed 250 youths aged 13 to 20 if they do household chores. While i'm not surprised nor bothered about results of questions like "do you make your own bed", "do you wash your clothes", "do you mop or sweep the floor", i was totally floored that 43 out of 250 responded NO to the question "DO YOU GET YOUR OWN DRINK".

WTF??? I simply cannot imagine yelling out to the house help "Hey, can you get me a drink of water? I want it at room temperature. Oh wait, add a dash of salt too, throat's a little scratchy. Better yet, go down to the supermart and get a lemon slice to go with it."

Seriously, cliched as it is, kids these days.
Please, LJ Dad and Mums, dont let your kid be like that, or i'll smack them on your behalf :)

11:09PM - The Chicken Munchies

Absorbed with my BlackBerry, I missed the West Coast market stop and ended up near West Coast Park. Since i was too lazy to walk back, i went into McDonalds' looking for dinner. Havent ate there in months so i saw a new(?) item: Chicken Munchies.

Went up to the auntie and asked "What's the difference between the 6 piece Chicken Munchies and Chicken Nuggets?"

"No difference."

"Har??"

"It's the same taste."

"..."

I have to thank her for making up my mind. Nuggets it was.

~

Went to the doctor a couple days ago for the cough. He examined my throat and gave his diagnosis, "Throat still looks red. I'll give you the cough syrup."

"Great, thanks!"

"And the logenzes.."

"Oh cool."

"And the antibodies."

"Wow."

You know how they say doctors these days dish out antibodies like nobody's business? Here was one fine example. Sure, doc knows best, but i'm pretty sure my cough didnt warrant antibodies. I certainly didnt take them as i didnt want to create some super resistant mutated bug haha. I am pretty much in favour of natural healing for these minor illnesses. In fact, i didnt touch a single drop / tablet / pill of those 3 medicines, dont even know why i went to the clinic lols.

11:54PM - The Fat Workers

Singapore urges obese workers to trim the fat :: The Asia File

I had a strange feeling in my fat gut while reading our dear Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan's statement:

If you are a little bit overweight, please think about slimming down. Honestly, if you are obese and have a poor work attitude, and I'm an employer and I have so many people applying for jobs, you think I will pick you unless you have some special skills that nobody has?

9:19PM - The Nama Chocolates

Royce dark chocolate

Shopping for my supply of dark chocolate, i went to Royce at Takashimaya. Narrowed down choice between the nama chocolate and the extra bitter dark chocolate (picture above).

Obviously i bought the latter although I set out to buy nama since they were out of stock for some time after the Straits Times review. Before making the purchase, i was asking the sales staff to explain the difference.

"Oh nama chocolate is about 70% cocoa, and the other 80-90%"

"Hmmmm ok."

She continued "The 80 to 90% one is like normal chocolate. You have to bite."

"Oh? Then the nama?" My curiosity was piqued.

"It melts in your mouth."

I had this flash of the world becoming a better place, children giggling and gamboling around naked and free of worries, rainbows colouring the clear skies.
"Hahaha!!" I laughed out loud. I thought it was funny - till i saw her embarrassed face and realised it wasnt meant to be.

~

Dang, im on the verge of falling sick. Throat feels funny, my nose is running, legs a little wobbly. I hope i didnt contract some weird disease from the

12:48AM - The Freedom Fly

I brought a colleague to the Cedele that opened recently near our office and i was telling him how much i love the food here and i have never really ate a bad (tasting) dish when i saw IT.

Waiter, there's a fly in my soup.

Classic, i know, but hell it was one fucking juicy fat fly. I dont know if it was bloated from being boiled in the apple pumpkin soup for too long. Cedele pride themselves for selling organic food, but that was too raw for me.

I brought the soup back to the counter and showed them the added protein. I'll have to give them props for being apologetic and asking if they could replace it with something else. I thought he would refund me lol - anyway i asked for the chocolate truffle cake and went back to my table. To my surprise, he came back with 2 slices of the cake for us, so that was good.

He took a while to serve the cakes, and when he came around, he couldnt remember my face. He looked hesitantly at me, and whispered, "Are you the one who had the fly in the soup?"

ROFL. I should have went "WHAT? FLY IN THE APPLE PUMPKIN SOUP? Oh ya, that was me." and send the lady in the next table having the same soup into a panic.

While i wont be avoiding that Cedele branch (otherwise i would have not many places left to lunch at), i dont think i will be ordering the soup again in a hurry.

I guess i'll have to let the soup menu fly under the radar for now.

~

I'm beginning to like the adjustable desk at the office. I used to think "why the hell would anyone want to stand when they can sit" but it sure helps to fend off those incoming ZzZzZs after a heavy lunch like today, thanks to the complimentary cake lol.

My colleague joked we should bring along a few baby roaches the next time and and put into the soup to get some freebies -_-

10:29PM - The Espresso Passport

Starbucks espresso passport

I only recently found out about this Starbucks Espresso Passport where you buy a pre-paid card for $30 that entitles you redeem to 6 Grande sized drinks. Not too bad, considering i always buy the Grande Latte for $5.80. And that's one of the cheapest Grande drinks, so you could always redeem the more expensive ones if it's your cup of joe.

More info here.

Push was one of the worst movies i've seen in a while - definitely worst of 2009 thus far. Totally full of plot holes, action scenes were just laughable and amateurish. To say it's a B Grade movie is really pushing the envelope.

Although i think Dragonball or Street Fighter might just have what it takes to topple Push from its throne. Anyone's watched Dragonball?

It's that time of the year again. The time of Idolatry. The time of "y'know dawg, there was some pitch problems here and there, but you worked it out dude". As always, i like to root for the underdogs.

12:47AM - The S9

Wow, it's been a long time since i've update. The new job's been keeping me real busy what with night conference calls and never ending emails streaming from the BlackBerry. The days and nights just morph into one continuous flow of activity that is only temporarily halted when the weekends come.

I'm not complaining - i should be happy i have a job in these times, more so, in an industry of my interest. And of course it helps im reimbursed relatively well for my efforts, so i've been guilty of splurging of late. I was looking to replace my 4 year old mp3 player and i did not want to get the ubiquitous iPod. So this was the result of a search for alternatives online.

S9

The Cowon S9. It loses to the iPod Touch in certain areas for sure, but im pretty happy with it. Love that I can just drop in my AVI format anime / TV downloads to watch right off the bat without having to convert it to MP4 or what have you.

There, i've done my part in helping the economy by spending and boy, does it feel good :D

10:48PM - The Job Hazard

So, after like almost 6 months of umm, sabbatical from work, i went back to the rat race. Life as i knew it had changed - when all i was ever concerned about was getting my daily cuppa; now, i have to contend with the daily grind. Wow, the transition is taking a huge toll on me as expected. My system suffered a shock at having to wake at such an insane hour of 8am. Nobody should have to wake before 8am. It's a bloody sin i tell ya.

And because my VPN access was only set up on the third day, i had to stay back late in the office to catch up on those damn emails to get up to speed on stuff. Whine whine.

Anyways, it is pretty unfortunate i was issued a BlackBerry for work. Now i really have no escape from work, especially with the US colleagues being active on our nights. I have to say though, it is really quite addictive. I can see why they call it the Crackberry. You can be so absorbed in it you become quite oblivious to surroundings.

Earlier, i was buying 2 packs of fresh milk from Sheng Shiong that costs $5.35. Handed a $5 bill to the auntie cashier. She asked "Got 35 cents?"

I rummaged the coin compartment of my wallet "Hmmm...sorry, dont have, i only have 5 cents" and i handed it to her.

"OK, so do you have 30 cents?" she asked.

"No, dont have. Can I just give you that 5 cents?"

She looked patiently and expectantly at me.

"???...Oh!" Realisation.

I got confused and thought i was buying soy milk, which usually costs $3+ (i buy that pretty often as well). I was expecting to get some change back and thought the auntie didnt have any loose change or something. Sheesh, so embarrassing. Of course, i blame it on the lack of sleep and the Crack. :)
